WINSTON CHURCHILL
Here was a man whose name
will live down the ages. A warrior, a politician, an orator, a painter, a
Nobel Prize winner for literature. But, perhaps, more than anything, a leader. A
leader whose courage and determination inspired youthful Western democracies to
defy a tyranny. A leader who even today inspires new generations.
Our three-day tour is
designed to celebrate the man. We visit a range of places and palaces intimately
connected with his life and work. In doing so, tour participants will not only
learn something
of the great man but enjoy seeing British heritage sites
and scenery that are worth the visit in their own right. This super tour, with
accommodation based in London, will appeal to both those who lived through the
tumultuous events of the 20th Century, and to those who want to learn more about
them, and the larger than life figures who so dominated the landscape. This tour
can be combined with our special one-day WW2-Occupied Lands
tour or with our
D-Day Normandy Beaches tour.

TENTATIVE ITINERARY
NIGHTSTOP
DAY ONE - WEDNESDAY
We begin at
the beginning. Our day sees us visiting Blenheim Palace, Churchill's birth
place. This incredible treasure house, set near Oxford on the edge of the
Cotswolds, was given to Winston's ancestor John, Duke of Marlborough. In
addition to a general tour of the palace, you'll also visit the Winston
Churchill Exhibition and 'Churchill’s Destiny' Exhibition.
Nearby, we
find the family vault and the simple grave that marks Churchill's final resting
place.
Also
included on today's itinerary will be Harrow, the famed public school were
Churchill received his secondary education before joining the army and, when
possible, a tour of the Royal Military College at Sandhurst where the young
Churchill attended for his military training. Alternatively, we will go to
Bletchley Park where the 'Enigma Code' was cracked and where we can visit the
Churchill Collection, an amazing display of privately owned memorabilia.
We return
to our accommodation. Please note, dinner is not included on this tour and you
are free to dine independently. London
DAY TWO - THURSDAY
Today we tour Kent
and specifically Chartwell, the house where Churchill and his family lived from
1922 to 1965, the year of his death at the age of 90. The estate is now owned by
the National Trust. We'll also take advantage of seeing several sites connected
with World War Two and specifically The Battle Of Britain, a battle that
inspired Churchill's great speech paraphrased as 'never has so much been owed
to so few'.
London
DAY THREE - FRIDAY
London is the focus of our Churchill exploration today. We'll see those famed
buildings that formed the various stages upon which the great man performed -
The Admiralty, the House of Commons, houses where he lived. We'll 'relive' the
Blitz and at The Imperial War Museum we'll see exhibitions on some of the wars
in which young Winston was involved - the Anglo-Boer War, Sudan and The Great
War (on our Sunday day-tour of the Great War’s
Ypres Salient we visit the site where Churchill served
in the Great War). We’ll go to St Paul’s Cathedral where his state funeral took
place and where now we can see the eight-meter long Winston Churchill Memorial
Screen. During our day, we’ll also find several statues of the great man
(including one with Roosevelt). The undoubted high-spot of the day will be our
visit to the Churchill Museum, the first national museum dedicated to Sir
Winston Churchill. It is housed in the unique setting of the Cabinet War Rooms,
the underground complex where Churchill and his government met as bombs rained
down on London in 1940.
